The term Galley is derived from the medieval Greek Galea, a small version of Dromon, the main warship of the Byzantine navy. The origin of the Greek word is unclear but may possibly be related to Galeos, the Greek word for dogfish shark. A galley is a type of ship that is mainly propelled by oars. The galley is characterized by a long , slender hull, shallow draft and low free board (the gap between the sea and the parapet). Almost all kinds of galleys had sails that could be used in favorable winds, but human effort was always the main method of propulsion. This allowed the galley to navigate independently of winds and currents. Galleys originated among the seafaring civilizations around the Mediterranean in the late second millennium BC and remained in use in various forms until the early 19th century in warfare ,trade and piracy. Galleys were battleships used by early Mediterranean naval forces including the Greeks, Illyrians , Phoenicians and Romans. They remained the dominant type of ship used for war and piracy in the Mediterranean until the last decade of the 16th century. As warships, galleys carried various types of weapons for a long time, including rams , catapults and cannons , but relied on large crews to overpower enemy ships in boarding operations.
