It initially will be used to accelerate nowadays single tip hydrogen DE passivation lithography (HDL) by more than 1000 times, allowing commercial fabrication of 2D atomically precise nanoscale devices. It could eventually be used to create 3D atomically precise materials, features, and devices.
The first innovation is the use of new MEMS actuators compared to the piezoelectric actuators currently used in STMs. Piezoelectric actuators are highly resonant systems that necessitate low-bandwidth (slow) controllers and exhibit hysteresis and creep, limiting their positioning precision. The second innovation is to simplify the connection geometry, allowing for precise and fast operation of arrays of multiple STM tips to increase throughput. Initially, the technology will be used to fabricate 2D HDL devices on hydrogen terminated silicon. The tip of an STM injects electrons into the chemical bond that holds the hydrogen atom to the silicon surface, causing it to break. Each hydrogen atom that is removed is then replaced with a dopant atom. For research purposes, this technique has been used to create single-electron transistors, quantum dots with only a few atoms, and 2D quantum metamaterials. The combination of HDL and MEMS STM could lead to atomic precision additive manufacturing. The envisioned system will enable AP lithography at speeds and throughputs that are 2-3 orders of magnitude faster as is currently possible with current technology.
