Journey of Indore from the Cleanest City of India to One of the Hotspots for COVID-19

Indore was ranked the cleanest city in the country consecutively for the fourth time in the cleanliness survey of the Central Government. In the last four years the municipal corporation of the city has made sure to eliminate garbage dumps, ensuring 100% household-waste segregation. The city has so far recorded as many as 173 coronavirus cases and 16 deaths resulting from the contagion.

INDORE: A city that always witnessed commercial and socio-cultural activities has now turned into a hotspot for coronavirus in Madhya Pradesh and is under curfew for almost a fortnight now.

Ironically, the city was ranked the cleanest city of the country for the fourth time in a row with the efforts of the municipal corporation of the city to vanish garbage dumps. The city has recorded 173 COVID-19 cases and 16 deaths so far.

Further, a 62-year-old doctor from Indore, died of coronavirus on Thursday morning while undergoing treatment at a hospital. The doctor, a general physician, had tested positive for the disease on Wednesday.

The local administration of the city is facing criticism over its strategy in dealing with the outbreak in its initial stages.

A healthcare activist, Amulya Nidhi said, “In the initial stage of the outbraek, the health department focused on screening those who arrived in Indore via Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat after returning from abroad.

“This was the major error of judgment as Indore being a commercial city witnesses the arrival and departure of thousands of people through railway and road. But such visitors were not screened initially,” he added.
