India’s Reliance Jio launches Zoom rival with 100 participant limits

India’s largest Telecom carrier- Reliance Jio, has officially launched a Zoom rival called JioMeet on 3rd July 2020. The app is available on platforms including the web, iOS and Android, supporting 100 participants in one meeting. The first formal announcement about the service was made by the company on 30th April 2020, and now JioMeet is available to everyone. Over 100,000 people downloaded the app during the test period.

This officially Reliance launched JioMeet as a video conferencing service is available for App Store, Google Play Store, and desktop users. It is further designed as an HD video conferencing app and can assist at a time for up to 100 participants which quite matches the capacity to the similar renowned groups including Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams.

JioMeet may have both the bells and whistles of mainstream video conferencing apps, such as screen-sharing scheduled meetings, and there is much more to know about the robust security and privacy aspects.

In April, India suggested not using the Zoom app to the government officials on account of privacy concerns arising out the same. In addition, a local company announced a project to build a secure video conferencing product of ₹ 1 crore ($130,000). This challenge has positively encouraged the Indian companies to design a few relevant indigenous solutions such as ‘Say Namaste’ app.

Besides Zoom, JioMeet will compete with Facebook’s messenger room. In particular, the social network in April invested $5.7 billion in exchange for a 9.9% stake in Reliance Jio Platforms. This move is expected to be a masterstroke for the Indian economy in this time of economic crisis. Jio’s step to introduce this app has actually killed two sparrows with one stone.

It is supposed to address the need of a robust HD video conferencing platform duly keeping in mind the privacy and safety of the data of the citizens. It is worth mentioning that such questions on the use of Zoom app were substantially raised which challenged its legitimacy and usage in the country.

JioMeet, on the other hand, has created a hope for safe solution that can simultaneously address the needs of the currently working from home employees on a larger scale.

Provided an indigenous solution : Following the league of Vocal for Local Campaign

Amidst the lockdown, when the already low economic cycle went on to a diminishing front due to the nationwide closures of all the manufacturing and retail facilities. The gradual reopening of the markets in the form of ‘un-lockdown’ is announced with the vision of ‘Vocal for local’.

This simply aims at encouraging the local production and the indigenous services, where JioMeet has successfully matched the second parameter. This is briefly expected to uplift the country’s economic conditions.
