European Smart Gas Meter Market Trends 2021 | Segmentation, Outlook, Industry Report to 2027

Europe is a significant contributor to the global smart gas meter market growing at a CAGR of 7.3% during the forecast period. In Europe, regional directives and national regulations are the key factors to drive the growth of the smart gas meter market. In particular, the Third Energy Package, and the 2009 Electricity and Gas Directives, which are aimed at liberalizing the electricity and gas markets to enable consumer participation and improve transparency, require suppliers to improve the frequency and accuracy of meter reading and billing and provide consumers with better access to consumption information. The 2009 Gas Directive require member states to carry out a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) for smart gas meters by September 2012.

However, in contrast to the Electricity Directive, which requires that 80% of consumers should have smart electricity meters by 2020, the Gas Directive does not specify how many consumers should have smart meters or provide a deadline for deployments following a positive CBA. This lack of enforceable EU regulations has contributed to the slower approach in gas, and several EU members states are yet to submit their CBAs for gas.

A number of factors affect both, the business case and possible social benefits of smart gas metering including the density of targeted gas customers, gas customer expenditure relative to electricity expenditure, the competitiveness of supply market and need for consumer engagement, meter location, and meter ownership. There exists considerable variability in the drivers of smart gas meter market at a national level and also, the pros and cons of smart gas metering vary widely in the region. Moreover, with the availability of next-generation technologies such as IoT-optimized 4G/5G mobile, it is expected that there will be a shift from legacy RF platforms to emerging standards like NB-IoT for gas metering which is further supporting the growth of smart metering solutions in Europe.
