Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial light breaks the chemical bonds in the polymer, causing cracks, chalking, and color change. UV stabilizers are used to inhibit degradation and improve the physical properties and longevity of polymers by maintaining strength, flexibility and appearance for end-user industrial applications.
UV absorbers function by preferentially absorbing harmful UV light, while HALS (hindered amine) light stabilizers inhibit the breakdown of the polymer by forming nitroxyl radicals. As a result, HALS provides high thermal and light stability because it is regenerated during the stabilization process.
