Myoglobin is an oxygen-binding heme protein found primarily in skeletal and cardiac muscle. This protein is released into the blood when cells are damaged. Measuring myoglobin may be useful in the diagnosis of myositis, myocardial infarction, and treatment of muscular dystrophy and myopathies. Myoglobin reagents are used to detect the amount of myoglobin released into the blood during cell damage. This reagent is also used to analyze and quantify the amount of myoglobin released into the blood after myocardial infarction and is also used for other indications of disease. In many quantitative assays or tests, myoglobin concentrations are assessed faster than creatinine and troponin. However, it is less specific than troponin.
