No movement, no assembly, no mobile internet- India Lockdown Kashmir and put leaders under house arrest.
Kashmir – The India-administered region is always a major area of discussion worldwide. Now, the recent drastic action of India government has given another topic to the world for discussion on this region. According to a report, India has placed parts of Kashmir under lockdown and has also arrested some of the local politicians due to the increased tensions in the disputed regions.
Not only the movements but the government has also banned public meetings and restricted the mobile internet and networks. The India reports stated that the, two ex-chief ministers of Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah were put under house arrest.
The government of Jammu and Kashmir said, “According to the order there will be no movement of people and all the educational institutions will remain closed.” Yet, there is no further explanation on this rapid action. Last week, the India government has deployed massive troops in the disputed areas and also ordered Hindu pilgrims and tourist to leave.
Apart from this action, speculation is coming out that, Delhi may be poised to take away special privileges of Kashmir such as preventing people outside the state from purchasing land there. This kind of decision may spark anger and raise tensions with Pakistan.
Terror among the Inhabitants
This major action taken by the government has raised fear and worry among the residents as it is also going to affect their daily life and activities.
A girl named Saniya Nisar, of age 28, is unsure and worried about her wedding ceremony which is scheduled on 17th of August. Her family has made exhaustive arrangements but has no idea what is going to happen in upcoming days.
Not only this, but there are numerous such examples of fear and fret you will come across in Kashmir. On Sunday, there were long queues outside medical stores, food stores, ATMs and petrol stations in the main city of Srinagar for storing the fast diminishing goods ahead of the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Azha, which is on August 12.
Moreover, the government has also issued orders that include some directions to non-local students to go to hometown, to the district administrators stay on standby and the doctors to get equipped. This is not the first time that the government has put the restrictions on Kashmir. In 2016, parallel restrictions were placed on Kashmir because of the murder of a famous rebel leader which was resulted in long street protests and the death of dozens of people.
